Chinese Herbal Medicine Under Scrutiny in Africa

Think Press Africa published on 3 June 2014 an extensive journalistic account titled "Get Rich or Die Trying: The Chinese Herbal Medicine 'Death Sentence' in Uganda" by James Wan.  The story focuses on the multinational company known as TIENS based in Tianjin, China.  TIENS has branches in 110 countries, including 16 in Africa.  In addition to Uganda, it is active in West Africa, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe.  The article questions its practices and safety based on an in-depth report from Uganda where 200,000 Ugandans have signed up believing the products will cure all their illnesses and help them make a fortune.
