West Point's CTC Sentinel published in April 2019 an article titled "Reigniting the Rivalry: The Islamic State in Somalia vs. al-Shabaab" by Caleb Weiss.
The author argues the Islamic State has significantly expanded its operations across Somalia, albeit from a low base. This has reignited tensions with the much larger al-Qaeda affiliate al-Shabaab.
