Africa, China, Huawei, and the Trump Administration

The Daily Maverick published on 24 February 2020 an article titled "Africa Could Be the Winner as the US Attempts to Stifle Huawei" by Cobus van Staden.

African governments have so far refused to comply with US pressure to boycott Huawei 5G technology, not least because the company has built the vast majority of data networks on the continent, supported by Chinese government funding. Africa's decision constitutes a calculated gamble that the development gains of Huawei's 5G outweigh the potential security risks. How the gamble will affect the continent's relationship with the Trump administration remans to be seen.
