Interview with Deutsche Welle

I'm quoted in the article "Africa's neocolonial era ending as U.S. and France seek new partnerships as follows:
"If you look at U.S. policy globally at all levels, I would say that Africa still has the bottom priority of all the major regions around the world," Ambassador David Shinn, former U.S. ambassador to Ethiopia and Burkina Faso, told Deutsche Welle. "Africa has increased somewhat in importance, first because increasing amounts of U.S. oil are imported from Africa, and second the counterterrorism angle. That has clearly elevated Africa in U.S. interests."
