Yejoo Kim, research analyst at the Centre for Chinese Studies at Stellenbosch University, in a brief commentary on 12 November 2012 described the situation at the Chinese special economic zone (SEZ) in Dukem, Ethiopia.
Construction at the industrial park began in 2009; several buildings now exist on the site including a shoe manufacturing company that employs more than 1,000 people. The SEZ in Ethiopia is still at an early stage of development and Kim concluded that it is too soon to judge the success of the project.
