The Institute for Security Studies in South Africa published a paper by Anneli Botha in April 2013 titled "Assessing the Vulnerability of Kenyan Youths to Radicalisation and Extremism."  The paper tries to answer the question: what makes Kenyan young people susceptible to extremists' jihadi ideology?  It points out that al-Shabaab in neighboring Somalia recruited Kenyans, Ugandans and Tanzanians to join its ranks but focuses on the domestic conditions that led to this recruitment in Kenya.
