Amnesty International published on 26 February 2021 a report titled "Ethiopia: Eritrean Troops' Massacre of Hundreds of Axum Civilians May Amount to Crime against Humanity."
Amnesty International reports that Ethiopian and especially Eritrean troops carried out multiple war crimes in their offensive to take control of Axum last November. The onslaught came directly after a small band of pro-TPLF militiamen attacked a military base in the nearby mountains.
The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission subsequently tweeted that the Amnesty "findings should be taken very seriously," adding the killings of civilians in Axum appear to have occurred in retaliation to an earlier attack by TPLF soldiers, presumably against the Eritrean soldiers.
