Conflict in Ethiopia: What Can the International Community Do?

Ethiopia Insight posted on 21 April 2021 a commentary titled "Reasons the International Community Is Unable to End the War in Tigray" by Fassil Hailu, a pen name for a regular Ethiopia Insight columnist.

The author argues there are five reasons why the international community  has been unable to end hostilities in Tigray Region:

(1) If the Ethiopian government is pushed too hard, it might embolden other disgruntled groups.

(2) The international community is hesitant to denounce a leader who recently received the Nobel Peace prize.

(3) There is a reluctance to take part in a forceful intervention because of bad experiences elsewhere.

(4) There is no functional international mechanism to address a crisis of such magnitude.

(5) Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has significant domestic political support.
