Ethiopia on 30 September asked 7 UN personnel to depart the country within 72 hours for "meddling" in Ethiopia's internal affairs. The UN expressed full confidence in its staff, saying they are guided by impartiality and neutrality. The US strongly condemned Ethiopia's action and said it expects to see "meaningful steps" within weeks toward a negotiated ceasefire in northern Ethiopia. The US will not hesitate to impose targeted economic sanctions on individuals who are are obstructing the humanitarian relief effort in the country.
