Report on minorities in Somalia

Minority Rights Group International published a report titled “No Redress: Somalia’s Forgotten Minorities” in November 2010.

The author, Martin Hill, concluded that the clan structure of the majorities continues to exclude minorities (Bantu, certain occupational groups and tiny religious minorities) from significant political participation and employment.

It limits their access to justice where abuse has been perpetrated against them or they stand accused of a crime. It also denies them their rights to development, education and sustainable livelihoods and prevents and punishes inter-marriage with members of majority groups.

The report (PDF) contains a brief summary of Somalia’s clan structure.
