Sudan and the U.S. List of State Sponsors of Terrorism

The Conversation published on 25 February 2020 a commentary titled "Sudan's Quest to Come Off the US Terror List: What's Been Done, What's Missing" by Andrew Edward Tchie, King's College London.

The United States put Sudan on its state sponsors of terrorism list in 1993 for good reason. It has remained on the list ever since even though Sudan has been cooperating with the U.S. for many years in combatting terrorism. The author argues that delisting Sudan without insuring necessary institutions and systems are in place to reverse 30 years of al-Bashir's rule could hamper the country's future. Unfortunately, the author's arguments are based almost entirely on reasoning that has nothing to do with combatting terrorism; hence, they are largely irrelevant to the purpose of the state sponsors of terrorism list. Sudan should come off the list.
