China’s Role in African Development

Richard Schiere, an economist with the African Development Bank, prepared a study titled, “China and Africa: An Emerging Partnership for Development? – An Overview of Issues.” It is dated May 2011.

He concludes that China’s phenomenal growth offers an opportunity to increase development in Africa while benefitting China by providing access to natural resources. He argues, however, that African countries need to improve their bargaining position with China to ensure that the China-Africa relationship contributes to sustainable growth and poverty reduction. The goals of the paper are to summarize the analysis on the economic exchange between China and Africa and to suggest policy recommendations to improve the benefits to both parties.
