China's Role in the East African Oil and Gas Sector

China is only one actor among many in the East African energy sector. In a nice summary dated August 2012, Ross Anthony of the Centre for Chinese Studies at Stellenbosch University said China is especially engaged in the construction of pipelines in the region. The Chinese presence is fragmented and investment decisions are based on financial return rather than a state-driven strategic plan. Anthony suggests China may seek joint-multi-national energy ventures in the region.
