China's Oil-backed Loans in Angola and Brazil

Ana Cristina Alves, senior researcher at the South African Institute of International Affairs, published an article in the first issue for 2013 of the Journal of Current Chinese Affairs titled "Chinese Economic Statecraft: A Comparative Study of China's Oil-backed Loans in Angola and Brazil."

The article is a case study of China's oil-backed loans in Angola and Brazil.  It concludes that securing long-term supply contracts and accessing exploration rights have proved more effective in Angola than in Brazil.
