Pambazuka News carried a brief piece by Mohamud M. Uluso on 20 June 2013 titled "Youth of Somalia: From Heroes to Criminals and Victims." The author notes that 73 percent of Somalia's population is below the age of 30 and the resulting youth bulge is a serious barrier to peace and stability until there are opportunities for employment, education, training and economic support of this group.
During Somalia's prolonged civil war, youth became prey for unscrupulous warlords, politicians, religious fanatics and pirate leaders. He argues this lost generation can only be recovered by an urgent and effective national and international program that empowers Somali youth.
