Chinese Communities Expand Globally and Impact Chinese Foreign Policy

Business Spectator published on 18 June 2015 an article titled "How Chinese Nationals Abroad Are Transforming Beijing's Foreign Policy" by Jonas Parello-Plesner, Danish Embassy in Washington, and Mathieu Duchatel, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

The article comments that as many as 2 million persons of Chinese origin now live in Africa.  In 2011, it was necessary to evacuate more than 35,000 Chinese nationals from Libya.  Smaller evacuations have occurred in South Sudan.  As the Chinese communities grow in Africa and elsewhere, it is causing China increasingly to conclude it has a responsibility to defend its nationals living overseas.
