Role of Women in Somalia's Upcoming Election

The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) in Nairobi published on 23 September 2016 a report titled "Somali Elections: Much At Stake for Gender Representation" by Hawa Noor and Peter Aling'o, both with ISS.

Somalia's provisional constitution calls for 30 percent of seats in the lower house to be occupied by women, who currently hold only 14 percent of seats in parliament. Given the clan-based formula that will be used to decide the October 2016 elections, the authors believe there is a real risk that the 30 percent number will be undermined.
