Comparing American and Chinese Cultural Institutes in Africa

Tableau Public published on 7 September 2018 a graph titled "Where Are Foreign Cultural Institutes in Africa?" by Joshua Nederhood.

While the chart shows far more American cultural institutes in Africa than those supported by China, the chart is misleading in that 117 of the American institutes are non-US government facilities that serve as American space locations. Only 41 are government-established American space locations and even many of them are a shadow of the former American cultural presence in Africa that existed before the abolition of the US Information Service. China has 48 Confucius Institutes at African universities and supports 30 Confucius classrooms at the high school level.
