China's Debt Cancellation and Relief in Africa

The China Africa Research Initiative at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies published in June 2020 a working paper titled "Debt Relief with Chinese Characteristics" by Kevin Acker, Deborah Brautigam, and Yufan Huang.

The paper reviews China's debt cancellation and restructuring in Africa.  It found that between 2000 and 2019, China cancelled at least $3.4 billion of debt in Africa.  During the same period, China restructured or refinanced about $15 billion of debt in Africa.
