The regional integration project proposed by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and President Isaias Afewerki looks like the main goal is strengthening the central governments of Ethiopia, Somalia, and Sudan as regional anchor states. The author argues the leaders of Ethiopia and Eritrea need to focus on internal issues in their respective countries; regional integration that is not based on internal stability will not last.
