The Conversation published on 28 February 2021 an analysis titled "Why Eritrean Refugees Choose the Risky Migration to Europe" by Amanda Poole, University of Pennsylvania, and Jennifer Riggan, Arcadia University.
Based on research in Ethiopia's Tigray Region between 2016 and 2019 (before the outbreak of conflict) in three Eritrean refugee camps, the authors found that many refugees made the dangerous journey to Europe because there were limited prospects for a productive life if they remained in Ethiopia.
