Foreign Policy (subscription required) posted on 4 May 2021 a commentary titled "Why Eritrea Won't Leave Ethiopia" by Seeye Abraha Hagos, former Ethiopian defense minister and former senior TPLF official.
This piece reviews the history since the mid-1980s of the Ethiopia-Eritrea relationship. The author then argues that Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed wants Eritrean military forces to remain in Ethiopia, adding that his calls for them to depart are just double talk. For his part, Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki wants to remain in Tigray Region to leverage the strong Ethiopian economy for his interests and regional ambitions to take the lead in the Horn of Africa.
