More on Resumption of Fighting in Ethiopia

The Associated Press published on 24 August 2022 an article titled "'Large-scale' Fighting Shatters Lull in Ethiopia's Tigray" by Cara Anna.

Fighting has resumed along a section of Tigray Region's border with Amhara Region.  Each side blames the other for resuming the conflict.  This is a major setback for the peace process.

What Does Eritrean President's Visit to Sudan Mean for Ethiopia?

The Associated Press published an article on 4 May 2021 titled "Eritrea's President Visits Sudan Amid Tensions over Ethiopia" by Samy Magdy.

Eritrea has had to assure Sudan that it has no role in the border dispute between Ethiopia and Sudan.  A Sudan government statement said leaders of the two countries will discuss the border dispute and Ethiopian-Sudanese differences over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Comment:  As relationships become more complicated in the Horn of Africa because of differences over the GERD, the Sudan-Ethiopia border conflict, and the continuing presence of Eritrean troops in Ethiopia, the visit by Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki to Khartoum takes on added importance and almost certainly raises questions in the minds of Ethiopia's leaders as to the intentions of Sudan and Eritrea.

Why Eritrea Will Not Leave Ethiopia

Foreign Policy (subscription required) posted on 4 May 2021 a commentary titled "Why Eritrea Won't Leave Ethiopia" by Seeye Abraha Hagos, former Ethiopian defense minister and former senior TPLF official.

This piece reviews the history since the mid-1980s of the Ethiopia-Eritrea relationship.  The author then argues that Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed wants Eritrean military forces to remain in Ethiopia, adding that his calls for them to depart are just double talk.  For his part, Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki wants to remain in Tigray Region to leverage the strong Ethiopian economy for his interests and regional ambitions to take the lead in the Horn of Africa.

Tigray War Likely to Continue at Least Until Beginning of Rainy Season

Ethiopia Insight published on 5 April 2021 a commentary titled "Why Peace Will Be Elusive in Ethiopia's Civil War in Tigray" by Kjetil Tronvoll, Bjorknes University College in Oslo.

The author suggests there will be no end to the conflict in Tigray Region before the start of the rainy season in June, after which military activity by all sides will be difficult.  This could result in a long drawn-out war.

US-Africa Economic Relations

Delaware's Senator Chris Coons, chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on African Affairs, released on 7 March 2013 thoughtful recommendations for strengthening trade and investment between the US and sub-Saharan Africa in a document titled "Embracing Africa's Economic Potential."

These common sense recommendations deserve careful consideration by both houses of Congress and the Obama Administration.
