Brookings published on 6 December 2021 an analysis titled "FOCAC 2021: China's Retrenchment from Africa?" by Yun Sun.
In an evaluation of the results of the Forum on China Africa Cooperation this month in Senegal, the author concludes that Beijing is moving away from its infrastructure-centric and Chinese loan-heavy approach to Africa in recent years. The new focus, however, is less evident. Trade promotion, especially facilitation of African exports to China, appears to be the key. On the other hand, it is hard to imagine that trade could fill the large space previously occupied by financing of infrastructure projects.
