Ethiopia, Egypt, Sudan and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam

Al-Monitor published on 7 January 2022 an article titled "Ethiopia to Generate Electricity from GERD Amid Negotiations Deadlock" by Mohamed Saied.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Blue Nile is about 80 percent complete, but not yet generating any electricity.  Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed convened a cabinet meeting at the GERD to underscore the importance Ethiopia attaches to the project.

Comment:  Ethiopia began filling the reservoir behind the dam during the rainy season in 2020 and again in 2021.  Despite warnings from Egypt and Sudan that this would do serious harm to the water supply in both countries, this did not happen.  Ethiopia plans to continue filling the reservoir during the rainy season that begins in June 2022.
