Aljazeera published on 25 February 2022 an article titled "'Ethnic Cleansing': Ethiopian Allies Accused of Abala Massacre" by Lucy Kassa.
Afar militia and Eritrean Defense Forces in December 2021 reportedly targeted Tigrayans in the town of Abala near the border between Tigray and Afar regions. They went house to house in a Tigrayan killing campaign. In August 2021, Tigrayan forces were accused of atrocities in other towns in Afar region.
