The Conversation published on 7 April 2022 an analysis titled "What Drives Chinese Migrants to Ghana: It's Not Just an Economic Decision" by Jinpu Wang, Syracuse University.
There are an estimated 30,000 Chinese living in Ghana. Based on ethnographic survey work in Ghana, the migration is due to a combination of economic and social issues such as overcoming the "hukou" residency registration system. Many Chinese migrating to Ghana and elsewhere in Africa hope to improve their social status.
