The Associated Press published on 18 November 2022 an article titled "UN Extends Somalia Arms Embargo Amid Government Dissatisfaction."
The UN Security Council voted 11 to 0 with Russia, China, Gabon, and Ghana abstaining to maintain an arms embargo on Somalia over strong objections from the government of Somalia. The UNSC imposed the arms embargo on Somalia in 1992 to cut the flow of weapons to feuding clan-based strongmen. The Somali government argues it needs the arms to combat the al-Shabaab terrorist group.
