Whither China's Belt and Road Initiative?

The Council on Foreign Relations published on 6 April 2023 a commentary titled "The Rise and Fall of the BRI" by Nadia Clark.

The number of new Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) projects peaked in 2016 and the value of the projects peaked in 2019 and has been on the decline since.  On the other hand, China's foreign direct investment in BRI countries has been increasing since 2019.  The author concludes that if the BRI can be saved, it will require Chinese government officials and recipient countries to implement risk management procedures and to improve coordination at all stages of projects.
