The Washington Post published on 8 June 2023 an article titled "USAID Cuts Food Aid Supporting Millions of Ethiopians Amid Charges of Massive Government Theft" by Katharine Houreld.
The US government is suspending food aid to Ethiopia after uncovering a widespread scheme to steal donated food coordinated by elements of the federal and regional governments. There has been significant diversion of food from 7 regions of Ethiopia. Food aid was being used to feed both the military and former fighters in Tigray Region. Some of it was even being exported to Kenya and Somalia. The UN World Food Program was reportedly complicit in the scheme.
