South Sudan Cabinet Change

South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit recently fired his Vice President, Riek Machar, and the entire cabinet. Amanda Lucey, researcher at the Institute for Security Studies in Pretoria, offered an analysis of the situation in a piece dated 30 July 2013 titled "Are South Sudan's Cabinet Sackings an Overdue Development Or a Recipe for Conflict?"

Friends of South Sudan Send Critical Letter to President Kiir

Four long-time, solid friends of South Sudan (and critics of the government in Khartoum) sent a brutally frank letter dated 24 June 2013 to President Salva Kiir Mayardit.  The letter sets forth their concerns about officially-sanctioned ethnic violence and rampant corruption.  It concludes with several recommendations.  The four signatories are Roger Winter, Eric Reeves, John Prendergast and Ted Dagne.
