Whither South Sudan?

The United States Institute for Peace (USIP) in Washington has devoted considerable effort in recent years of the issues of South Sudan and Sudan. It has just posted two items on South Sudan that are worth reading.

The first consists of a series of insightful comments on the current situation in South Sudan by USIP specialists on the country. Click here to access the commentary.

The second item is the opening remarks at USIP on 9 July 2012 by US Special Envoy Princeton Lyman titled "South Sudan: Is There a Need for a New Vision?" Ambassador Lyman offers a balanced and honest account of the progress and problems facing South Sudan today. Click here to read his remarks.

Background on Sudan-South Sudan Border

The Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) published a brief study titled Drifting Apart? The Impact of Secession and Armed Violence on Border Areas in South Sudan. It focuses on the perspectives and interests of the borderland people and how they have been affected by the division of Sudan. The authors are Oystein H. Rolandsen, a senior researcher at PRIO, and Alfred Lukuji, dean of the College of Rural Development and Community Studies at the University of Juba. Click here to read the report.
