What We Lost When We Lost USAID

The New York Times published on 8 February 2026 a commentary titled "What We Lost When We Lost USAID" by Jeremy Konyndyk, Refugees International.

Aside from the tangible damage done to dismantled programs that aided the world's needy, American foreign assistance policy is a reflection of who our country wants to be and of the kind of world we seek to build.  The demise of the US Agency for International Development is resulting in an America that increasingly stands isolated and friendless.

Ethiopia Loses Temporary Protected Status in US

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services published on 12 December 2025 an announcement titled "DHS Announces the Termination of Temporary Protected Status for Ethiopia."

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security concluded that conditions in Ethiopia no longer pose a serious threat to the personal safety of Ethiopian nationals.  Consequently, Secretary Kristi Noem terminated the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation of Ethiopia.  Ethiopian nationals with no other lawful basis for remaining in the United States have 60 days to voluntarily self deport.

VisaHQ.com posted on 13 December 2025 an announcement titled "U.S. Terminates Temporary Protected Status for Ethiopians, Affecting 30,700 Residents."

Comment:  This is part of the Trump administration's policy to remove from the country as many non-Americans as possible.  Reporting on the number of Ethiopians affected varies.  Some accounts place the number holding TPS as low as 5,000.

Deporting Somalis from Minnesota Encounters Reality

The New York Times published on 3 December 2025 an article titled "Obstacles to Trump's Push to Deport Minnesota Somalis: Reality and the Cold" by Ernesto Londono and Talya Minsberg.

President Trump called Somalis in Minnesota "garbage" and vowed to deport them.  But there is a problem.  The vast majority of Somalis have legal status in the United States and very few are legally candidates for deportation.  Trump has, however, created an atmosphere of xenophobia in the Twin Cities area.

Trump Lashes Out at Somalis in US

President Trump said he does not want immigrants from Somalia in the country ahead of an expected ICE operation in Minnesota, where the Somali American community is concentrated.  Last month, Trump said he would revoke Temporary Protected Status for Somalis in Minnesota.

He referred to Somali American elected member of Congress, Ilhan Omar, as "garbage."  Omar responded that "his obsession with me is creepy" and "I hope he gets the help he desperately needs."

Israel to Deport Unauthorized Immigrants Following Clashes Among Eritreans

The New York Times published on 3 September 2023 an article titled "Netanyahu Calls to Expel Unauthorized Immigrants After Eritreans Clash" by Patrick Kingsley and Abdi Latif Dahir.

Tens of thousands of Eritreans have made their way illegally to Israel seeking asylum.  Some support the government in Eritrea while others oppose it.  Clashes between these two groups broke out last week in Tel Aviv during an event organized by the Eritrean embassy to celebrate 30 years of independence from Ethiopia.  Consequently, Israel called for the deportation of all unauthorized immigrants from the country.
