EU to Pick Up Financing of China's Infrastructure Slack in Africa

 Politico published on 15 February 2022 an article titled "EU Temps Africa Away from Chinese Influence" by Stuart Lau and Barbara Moens.

As China pulls back from infrastructure financing in Africa, the EU is stepping up its efforts through its Global Gateway fund of 150 billion Euros over 7 years.

Quotes from China-Africa Stories

Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Africa has resulted in an increase in press inquiries and quotations from things I have written on China-Africa relations.  They include the 25 March 2013 Voice of America article titled "Xi Tries to Ease African Concerns about China's Influence," by Michael Lipin, US News and World Report 8 March 2013 commentary by Stephen Hayes titled "U.S. Should Heed Senators' Warning on Africa," and Kingsley Igbohor's 20 March 2013 blog piece titled "China, Africa's Confusing Puzzle."

China in Africa Discussion

Radio France 24 hosted on 26 March 2013 a frank and balanced discussion on China in Africa.  The participants were Solange Guo Chatelard, associate at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropoligy, CERI Sciences Po; Alexandre Kateb, managing director, Competence Finance Consulting in Paris; and Adama Gaye, author of China-Africa: the Dragon and the Ostrich.  Francois Picard hosted the discussion. 

The program can be accessed as two podcasts, the first of 18 minutes and the second of 19 minutes. The discussants covered a wide range of topics including loans, investments, trade, political conditionality, neocolonialism, security, Africans in China, BRICS, Taiwan, Zambia, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Tanzania.
