Lucy Corkin, previously with the Centre for Chinese Studies at Stellenbosch University, discussed her new book, Uncovering African Agency: Angola's Management of China's Credit Lines at Chatham House in London on 25 July 2013.
The book argues that a wide range of different countries have demonstrated different capabilities and experiences of engagement with China, and that Angola has been among the most successful. By examining China's involvement in Angola, she assessed how different African states exploit this relationship to their advantage. Angola provides China with 20 percent of its imported oil.
