Analysis of Chinese and American aid and trade with Africa

Simon Freemantle and Jeremy Stevens, both research analysts with Standard Bank in South Africa, have published an excellent analysis of Chinese and American trade with and aid to Africa.
Dated March 9, it appears on the Standard Bank website.
Although the United States remains the largest importer of African commodities, almost entirely oil, China remains the largest exporter to Africa and holds the title as Africa’s largest single trading partner overall.
The United States has a trade deficit with Africa while China, in the past couple of years, has had a trade surplus. The United States is a much larger supplier of foreign aid to Africa than is China.
