Is China's One Party Model Right for Africa?

News24.com posted on 23 August 2018 a commentary titled "How China Is Changing Democracy in Africa" by William Gumede, University of Witwatersrand.

The author notes that many African leaders are increasingly using China's example of having development without democracy to argue that Africa can forego democracy in pursuing industrialization, growth, and nation-building. He cites the growing connections between certain African ruling political parties and the Communist Party of China (CPC). The author acknowledges the success the CPC has had in China in reducing poverty, industrializing, and growing the economy but said this is due less to China's one party state than it is to the decisions made by the state. The implicit conclusion is that liberal democracy should still matter in Africa.
