China Dialogue Ocean published on 9 July 2020 an article titled "Sea Shepherd Helps the Gambia Tackle Illegal Fishing" by Louise Hunt.
Most industrial fishing trawlers off Gambia and Senegal in West Africa are Chinese owned, although long distance fleets from Turkey are also common. Many of the fish are processed in Chinese-owned fish meal plants in Senegal and the Gambia. There are numerous problems with illegal, unregulated, and unreported fishing that often involve a reluctance by African governments to take actions that might offend China because of its investments in these countries. In the meantime, the long-distance fishing is harming local artisanal fishing and endangering fish stocks in the waters off shore.
