Quartz Africa published on 27 January 2021 an article titled "How Many Chinese Workers Are There in Africa Now?" by Abubakar Idris.
Drawing on research from the China Africa Research Initiative, the author says there were as of 2019 183,000 Chinese contract workers in Africa. This number is 48 percent lower than during the peak year of 2015. Most of the workers are in Algeria and Angola.
The numbers in this report significantly understate the total Chinese community in Africa as they omit long-standing Chinese communities, some of which date back more than a century, business persons, professional personnel, small traders, students, etc.
