The Washington Post published on 19 November 2021 an opinion piece titled "Foreign Powers Are Intervening in Ethiopia. They May Only Make the Conflict Worse" by Yohannes Woldemariam, George Mason University, and Nic Cheeseman, University of Birmingham.
The authors conclude: "Foreign powers cannot build an international coalition for peace without recognizing their own considerable errors--ones that have aggravated the conflict and made it all the more intractable."
Comment: Has all foreign involvement aggravated the Ethiopian conflict? Possibly. But a commentary that appears to equate Eritrean military atrocities in Tigray Region with US sanctions against Eritrea and perhaps eventually against all sides in Ethiopia seems off target. Speaking as an academic, it is so easy for us to sit on the sidelines and criticize decision makers, but it would be more useful to hear ideas on how to end the civil war.
