Reuters published on 21 April 2022 an article titled "Ethiopians Queue Up to Volunteer for Russia's Fight in Ukraine" by Dawit Endeshaw.
Based on social media rumors that Russia was recruiting volunteers to fight in Ukraine, hundreds of Ethiopians lined up outside the Russian embassy in Addis Ababa to join the fight and receive a signing bonus of $2000. Russia denied that there is any effort to recruit Ethiopians and the government of Ethiopia expressed appreciation for the denial.
