The Chicago Tribune published on 19 May 2022 a letter to the editor titled "In Somalia, Business as Usual Is a Bad Idea for US Interests" by Elizabeth Shackleford, former US diplomat at the embassy in Mogadishu.
The author argues that the US must be more conditional with its military support to Somalia, using it as leverage to improve governance and to reduce corruption.
