The Bruegel Blog posted on 23 June 2022 a commentary titled "A New Kind of Belt and Road Initiative after the Pandemic" by Alicia Garcia-Herrero and Eyek Freymann.
The authors argue that China's leadership remains committed to the Belt and Road Initiative in the post-COVID-19 era, but it is moving away from the funding of infrastructure and has increasingly linked it to China's geopolitical objective of proposing an alternative global order to the liberal order led by the United States.
