Defence Web published on 4 November 2022 an article titled "Second Russian/Chinese/SA Naval Exercise Set for February."
South Africa, Russia, and China announced their intention to hold a second tri-nation naval exercise in South African waters in February 2023. The first joint naval exercise took place in November 2019, prior to COVID-19.
The opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) called the exercise "a terrible error of judgement" in view of the world's opposition to Russian military aggression in Ukraine. The DA added that "participation in this exercise confirms without doubt the South African government's support of Russia for its illegal invasion of Ukraine."
