Atrocities in Ethiopia's Amhara Region

 Human Rights Watch published on 4 April 2024 a report titled "Ethiopia: Military Executes Dozens in Amhara Region."

Human Rights Watch (HRW) reported that the Ethiopian military summarily executed scores of civilians in Merawi, a town in Amhara region, during fighting in January and February with Fano militia.  HRW called for an independent inquiry by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Ethiopia: Mass Arrests in Amhara Region

 The Associated Press published on 3 June 2022 an article titled "Ethiopia's Mass Arrests Show Rift with Former Amhara Allies."

More than 4,500 people have been arrested in Amhara region as of 23 May.  Among those arrested are members of the Amhara militia known as Fano, who were accused of some of the worst atrocities in Tigray region.

Surveillance and State Control in Ethiopia

The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace published on 18 May 2017 a study titled "Surveillance and State Control in Ethiopia" by Saskia Brechenmacher.

The author argues that the closing of civic space in Ethiopia has the following key features:

--Harsh restrictions on foreign funding for civil society organizations working on a wide range of politically related issues.
--Violent repression of civic mobilization in the name of counterterrorism and anti-extremism.
--Efforts to bring all independent civil society groups--including development and humanitarian actors--in line with the government's national development policy.
