Ethiopia: Investigative Report on Ethnic Killings at Mai Kadra

 Reuters published on 7 June 2021 a lengthy investigative report titled "How Ethnic Killings Exploded from an Ethiopian Town" by Katharine Houreld, Michael Georgy, and Silvia Aloisi.  

This is an account of the ethnic violence that took place in mid-November 2020 at and around Mai Kadra in western Tigray Region.  The authors conclude there were two rounds of ethnic killings.  The first round was carried out by ethnic Tigrayans against Amhara who were living in Mai Kadra.  The second round constituted revenge killings of Tigrayans by Amhara.

Irish Times Account of Situation in Ethiopia

 The Irish Times published on 12 April 2021 an article titled "War in Tigray Threatens to End Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed's Dream of Unity" by Andres Schipani and David Pilling.

This is recent journalistic account of developments in Ethiopia, especially Tigray Region, that includes a visit to Tigray.  

Mechanism for Investigation of Atrocities in Ethiopia's Tigray Region

 Ethiopia Insight posted on 12 April 2021 a commentary titled "Justice Will Not Be Served By a Joint Ethiopia-UN Inquiry into Tigray Atrocities" by Getachew Gebrekiros Temare, human rights activist.

The author argues that the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission should be excluded from any investigation in Tigray Region because it lacks political independence, capacity, and experience.  He adds the office of the UN High Commission for Human Rights should launch an independent investigation.

Comment:  It goes without saying that whatever the composition of the investigation it include the killing of Amhara at Mai Kadra as well as the atrocities committed against Tigrayans.

Tigrayans Continue to Be Forced Out of Western Tigray

Reuters published on 29 March 2021 an article titled "'You Don't Belong': Land Dispute Drives New Exodus in Ethiopia's Tigray." 

Amhara militia are forcing Tigrayans out of western Tigray from land claimed by the Amhara.  The Norwegian Refugee Council said 140,000 to 185,000 Tigrayans left West Tigray over a two week period in March.

Who Should Investigate Alleged War Crimes in Ethiopia?

 Ethiopia Insight posted on 24 March 2021 a commentary titled "There Is No African Solution for Ethiopia's Tigray Problem" by Yonas Aregawi, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany.

The author argues that the United Nations, not the African Union, should investigate alleged war crimes in Ethiopia's Tigray Region.  

Ethiopian Prime Minister Acknowledges Atrocities in Tigray War

 The Associated Press published on 23 March 2021 an article titled "Ethiopia's Leader Says Atrocities Reported in Tigray War" by Rodney Muhumuza.  

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed acknowledged that atrocities committed by all sides have occurred in Tigray Region.  He added that Eritrean troops are in Tigray without his blessing.
