WHO Chief Says Uncle "Murdered" by Eritrean Troops

 The Washington Post published on 15 December 2022 an article titled "WHO Chief Says Uncle Was 'Murdered' by Eritrean Troops in Ethiopia's Tigray" by Victoria Bisset.

The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said on 14 December that Eritrean forces inside Ethiopia's Tigray Region "murdered" his uncle together with more than 50 people in the same village.  Tedros, an ethnic Tigrayan, did not provide further details.  Eritrean forces have operated inside Tigray Region since the outbreak of conflict in Tigray Region two years ago.  

Ethiopia Threatens to Sever Relations with Certain Countries

 South Africa's News 24 published on 29 October 2022 an article titled "Tigray Conflict Talks: Ethiopia Threatens to Cut Ties with Countries Pushing 'Sinister Political Agenda'" by Lenin Ndebele.

Ethiopia has threatened to cut diplomatic ties with countries that it believes are making politically motivated accusations about the civil war in Ethiopia.

Interview with Tigrai Press on Situation in Ethiopia

 Arizona-based Tigrai Press invited me on 14 September 2022 to respond to questions about the situation in Ethiopia and especially in Tigray Region.  The half hour video discussion focused on the international and American reaction to the crisis and the role of Eritrea.  

The Lancet Editorializes on WHO's Ethiopian Director General

 The Lancet published on 27 August 2022 an editorial titled "Tedros: Tigray, the Triple Billion, and a Second Term."

The editorial reviews briefly the controversial remarks about racism by the World Health Organization's (WHO) Ethiopian Director General, Tedros Adhanom.  The main focus of the editorial is, however, on Tedros' second term as head of the WHO.  It argues that he needs to devolve responsibility and provide more support to strengthened WHO regional offices rather than rely so heavily on direction from the top.

 The Conversation published on 28 January 2022 a commentary titled "WHO Head Tedros Faces a Challenge All Humanitarians Know Well" by Mukesh Kapila, University of Manchester.

The government of Ethiopia strongly opposes the reelection of Tedros Adhanom as director general of the World Health Organization.  Tedros, a Tigrayan from Ethiopia, angered the government when he called attention to the humanitarian crisis in Tigray Region.

WHO Head Describes Situation in His Home of Tigray as Horrific

 Aljazeera published on 17 May 2021 an article titled "People Face 'Horrific' Situation in Ethiopia's Tigray: WHO Chief,"

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who is an Ethiopian from Tigray Region, commented on 16 May that the humanitarian situation in Tigray is "horrific."  He said five million residents now need humanitarian aid; acute malnutrition has become widespread.

 The New York Times published on 24 April 2021 a commentary titled "The Anguish of the World's Doctor" by Nicholas Kristof.

This is an account of the dilemma faced by World Health Organization leader, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, an Ethiopian from embattled Tigray Region who must focus on combatting COVID-19. He grieves quietly. 

US Gets WHO and Its Director General Wrong

Ethiopia Insight posted on 21 June 2020 a commentary titled "How the West Gets the WHO and Tedros Wrong" by Henok Reta, former correspondent at Ethiopia's The Reporter and now resident in New Zealand.

The author concludes that the attacks on the WHO and its Director General, Tedros Adhanom, are part of the anti-China policy of the Trump administration and have little to do with the actual competence of either the WHO or its Director General.

The article discusses the challenges that World Health Organization Director Tedros Adhanom faces as he navigates COVID-19, China, and the Trump administration. 

Ethiopian Selected as Head of World Health Organization

The New York Times published on 23 May 2017 an article titled "W.H.O. Elects Ethiopia's Tedros as First Director General from Africa" by Donald G. McNeil Jr. and Nick Cumming-Bruce.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus of Ethiopia has been elected as the new director general of the World Health Organization. The first African to head the agency, Dr. Tedros was previously minister of foreign affairs and minister of health in Ethiopia.

Ethiopian Foreign Minister Looks At 50 Years of OAU/AU

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Organization of African Unity/African Union, Ethiopian Foreign Minister Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made comprehensive remarks at Chatham House in London on 13 May 2013.

One of the issues he highlighted was progress in Africa on democratic governance.  Foreign Minister Tedros commented that "as we chart the way forward, I believe there is a clear need to mobilize our efforts to consolidate peace and stability, deepen the roots of democratic governance and bring about structural transformation to sustain the growth momentum.  This is essentially the major focus of our short, medium and long term strategies." 

These are noble goals.  It is important that Ethiopia pursue them, especially the need to "deepen the roots of democratic governance."
