China Moves Pharmaceutical Production to Africa

 The South China Morning Post published on 14 October 2024 an article titled "Chinese Pharmaceutical Firms Expand to Africa under 'Health Silk Road'" by Jevans Nyabiage.  

As Chinese pharmaceutical companies maximize production in China, they seek business opportunities outside the country, including Africa, which also has the world's fastest growing population.

China's Health Diplomacy in Madagascar

The China-Africa Project published on 21 July 2020 an article titled "Health Diplomacy or Health Dependence: A Critical Assessment of China's Health Aid to Madagascar" by Paul Kadetz, University College London. 

The author concluded that although Sino-Malagasy health aid does not appear to have fostered a self-sufficient health care system independent of aid from China, a better way forward is needed.

Chinese Manufacturing Operations in Ethiopia (French/English)

Thierry Pairault, CNRS--Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, recently posted a short note in English dated 26 February 2018 titled "China in Ethiopia: About Humanwell." It describes the process followed by a midsize Chinese pharmaceutical company, Humanwell Healthcare Group, to establish a manufacturing plant in Ethiopia and why a much larger Western company, GlaxoSmithKline, chose not to invest there.

The second piece dated 3 November 2018 and in French is titled "Ethiopie: chaussures et parcs industriels." It is a longer account of the Hujian shoe company and Chinese industrial parks in Ethiopia.

India Versus China in Africa

Aljazeera ran on 10 July 2016 a 25 minute podcast titled "Can India Match China's Economic Influence in Africa?" It included a discussion with Alex Awiti, director of the East African Institute at Aga Khan University, Malancha Chakrabarty, Observer Research Foundation, and Andrew Leung, China analyst.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently visited Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, and Kenya. The program compared the approach of China and India to Africa.
