Rethinking Stabilization Efforts in Somalia

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute published on 9 May 2019 an analysis titled "Rethinking Stabilization Efforts in Somalia" by Giovanni Faleg, European Union Institute for Security Studies.

The planned withdrawal of AMISOM in 2021 from Somalia threatens all stabilization programs. Without substantial support, the Somali National Army will not be able to maintain its territorial gains. The author proposes a three part plan for stabilizing Somalia before AMISOM departs.

Stabilizing Somalia, South Sudan and the DRC

The Rift Valley Institute published in 2016 conference proceedings titled "Stabilization in Eastern and Central Africa: Insights from Somalia, South Sudan and the DRC."

The objective of the conference was to question, review, evaluate and exchange lessons on stabilization programs in the DRC, Somalia and South Sudan with the aim of informing policies that enhance peace and security in eastern and central Africa. This report contains the highlights from this gathering.

The African Union's Experience in Somalia: Lessons for the UN

The International Peace Institute published in May 2016 a report titled "The Surge to Stabilize: Lessons for the UN from the AU's Experience in Somalia" by Walter Lotze, Centre for International Peace Operations, and Paul Williams, George Washington University.

The report focuses on AMISOM's move from war-fighting to stabilization, challenges faced by AMISOM in this progression, its strategy for dealing with al-Shabaab, and lessons learned.
