US to Provide COVID-19 Vaccine to Africa

The White House published on 3 June 2021 a "Statement by President Joe Biden on Global Vaccine Distribution."

The United States earlier committed $4 billion to support the WHO's global COVAX program.  Although COVAX was well funded, it did not have adequate quantities of vaccine to distribute.  Its distribution to Africa so far has been modest.

The Biden administration announced that by the end of June it will share 80 million doses of  the U.S. vaccine supply with the world.  At least 75 percent of the first 25 million doses--nearly 19 million doses--will be shared through COVAX.  Approximately 5 million doses of the first 25 million are designated for Africa.  This is the beginning of a major US vaccine contribution to Africa.
